OMG! The Barbie 2023 movie WAS AMAZEBALLS! I pinky swear!
When the Barbie movie poster was first released in April 2022, I knew I had to watch this masterpiece! Growing up watching Barbie Movies (for a zillionth time) and playing with fake Barbie dolls (cause we couldn’t afford the original Mattel toys), the release of this movie was the ultimate fan service for a millennial Barbie fan like me.

Spoiler alert!
Barbie, (played by the perfect Margot Robbie) was living a perfect Barbie life, with her variations of Barbies and Kens in the pink Barbie Land… until one night, she thought about dying!
Soon, Barbie found her owner, Gloria, a receptionist at Mattel and her cynical daughter Sasha in the real world. When the trio returned to Barbie Land, they were surprised to find it had turned into Kendom! Apparently, Ken, (played by the chiselled chest Ryan Gosling) had led the Kens to take over the government with his patriarchal idea, whereas the rest of the Barbies miraculously became dumb.
The movie ended with Barbie visiting the gynaecologist in the real world. (I’m assuming she wanted to be a real person)
Every second of the movie was an esoteric experience. But, what stood out to me was Gloria’s empowering speech about how women should behave in the real world.
“We have to be thin but not too thin, and we can never say we want to be thin, you have to say you want to be healthy. But also you have to be thin. You have to answer for men’s bad behaviour which is insane but if you point that out you’re accused of complaining. ” – Gloria
That was the most relatable statement to me.
As women,
We are expected to be both capable and dumb to allow space for men to stroke their egos; pretty but not too pretty like we are high-maintenance bimbos; healthy but not too muscular like we can lift the cargo.
This type of male-oriented mindset is more prevalent in Muslim-dominated countries. Trust me, I know because I’ve seen these Muslim husbands demanding their wives to serve them like Gods. I’ve also seen incompetent male leaders taking advantage of women simply because they are men and can get away with it.
Apart from the empowering messages sprinkled throughout the movie, I LOVE the fashion, the ridiculous lines and the wittiness of the characters! Speaking of which, I was THRILLED to see my favourite Sex Education’s cast Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells reunited in the movie!

Fun fact: Did you know there was a shortage of pink because the movie used too much of it?!
I totally did not expect a Barbie movie could bring out a roller coaster of emotions in me. That ladies and gentlemen, is how you know a movie has done a marvellous job. Overall, Barbie is a fun and heart-warming cinematic ride with a thought-provoking message – She’s a Barbie, he’s just Ken. (read between the lines)
Wear something pink and watch it with some friends and family.
Rating: 9/10. Highly recommended for all ages.
